CHAPTER NINE

THE SUN HAD just begun peering over the jagged horizon as we broke camp in the valley. The morning light sliced through the wasteland, casting long, skeletal shadows that seemed to claw at the edges of the Labyrinth’s entrance. The air was cool, but a creeping heat of dread was settling in my chest.

We moved with the efficiency of a seasoned unit, each of us knowing our role and executing it without a word. The air was cool, but there was a palpable heat of tension among us; we were about to enter the Labyrinth.

"Do you think we're ready for this?" Tessa asked softly, biting her lip as her fingers nervously fidgeted with her wrench. Her tension drew my attention, the subtle quiver in her voice pulling at something deeper within me.

"We don't have much of a choice," I said, scanning the horizon for any signs of movement. The wasteland was a dangerous place, but it was the Labyrinth that truly had us on edge. "If we wait any longer, the Overlord’s forces will catch up and find us."

Lila shrugged. "We can take 'em," she said, but even her usual brash confidence had a thread of doubt running through it. She was the best archer and woodland ranger I'd ever seen, but even she knew that a direct confrontation with the Overlord’s mechanized army was a chancy proposition.

We trudged on, the ground a mix of cracked clay and scattered metal debris. We had to carefully watch each step; more than once we'd encountered hidden mines or other traps. The entrance to the Labyrinth loomed larger with each passing mile, a massive, ornate gate set into a wall of shifting, grinding gears.

"Looks like something out of a nightmare," Finn muttered. The youngest of our group, he had a knack for stating the obvious in a way that still managed to be insightful. He was right; the gate had an almost organic quality to it, like the maw of some enormous, metal beast.

"Nightmares are my specialty," Seraphina said. "We'll be fine." Her wry smile held an edge of dark amusement, a constant enigma. Even after all this time, she kept me grounded in ways I couldn’t fully understand, yet always needed.

We reached the base of the wall, and Lila immediately went to work. “Hand me your knapsack,” she said to me. She dug deep and pulled a small vial from the pack and uncorked it with her teeth.

"Are you sure that's going to work?" Riley asked. The stocky, former blacksmith had an almost professional skepticism about everything, and in this case, she had a point. The potions were some that Lila had found at the first level of the Eternal Dungeon, the Realm of Wolves. Plus, outside magic just didn’t work well here in the Mechanical Realm.

"It worked before," Lila said, tilting her head back and taking a quick swallow. "Mostly."

"Mostly?" Jaxon raised an eyebrow. The hulking warrior was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. In this case, we all turned our eyes to Lila, waiting for her to either disappear or explode.
